Picture Tag...again =P

I've been tagged by Shara. I know I've done type of thing before, but this time it's a different picture (I think last time it was the fourth file and fourth picture). I'll blog about it, but I don't think I'll tag anyone. Nothing personal. =)

Here are the instructions:
1. Go to your my documents/my pictures
2. Go to your sixth file
3. Go to your sixth picture
4. Blog about it
5. Tag six people

And here is the picture:This is the gravestone of my great-uncle Alton Dahle and his wife Zelda. We visited it during a family reunion in Idaho last year (when I was 13 weeks pregnant...ugh, that trip wasn't exactly a good memory). They are buried right next to by Grandma and Grandpa Dahle, my mom's parents, who passed away when I was 2 and 6, respectively.
I don't have many memories of them--my grandparents or Uncle Alton and Aunt Zelda. What I do remember are little bits from summers spent in Fruitland, Idaho, playing in and around my grandpa's mobile home, which was just down the hill from Uncle Alton. Alton was my grandpa's older brother--I think Alton was the second oldest of 10 children, and Grandpa was 9th or something like that (Mom, please correct me if I'm wrong).

I don't remember Grandma at all, but my mom tells me that she just loved her "only daughter's only daughter" (for those who don't know, my mom has four brothers and no sisters, and of course, Kirsti and Brianne weren't born until after Grandma had already passed away). And apparently I sat on her lap while she rolled around on her wheelchair. Sounds like fun. Grandpa had been sick for as long as I could remember. He had cancer of the--mouth? throat? I'm not sure which one exactly--and, because of that, his voice sounded a little strange. And he had an eyepatch, which made him look a little scary to me, a 4, 5, or 6-year-old. But I remember sitting on his lap occasionally, and I remember that he told cool stories. I really wish I could have known him better. Both he and Grandma died way too young, in my opinion, and I look forward to seeing them and getting to know them, be it when I die or when the Second Coming happens and they are resurrected. I've always loved Grandma's name, too. Her actual name was Wilma Jacqueline, but she went by Jackie. I've thought about naming my daughter that, if I ever have one. Maybe not the Wilma part, but Jacqueline. It's a beautiful name.

I remember Uncle Alton a little bit more, and I have vague memories of crossing the bridge over the creek that separated his field from my grandpa's mobile home property, hiking up the hill while trying to avoid the cowpies, and going on rides on Uncle Alton's riding lawn mower. It was awesome. I also remember losing the toenail on my left big toe because the board that kept the cows off the creek bridge dropped on my foot...yeah, that was painful. And I remember that Uncle Alton took me to my Grandpa's funeral--except we first went to the wrong place and didn't realize it until we looked in the casket. That was a little awkward. We eventually ended up at the right place, where I remember being surprised by how stiff Grandpa looked and how cold his skin felt (I think one of my brothers dared me to touch his forehead). I may have been confused as to why he wasn't wearing his eyepatch anymore, but my mind may have made that part up.

I don't think I've been to another funeral since then--or have I? The only person close to me that has passed away since then is my Grandma on my dad's side--I think--and that was just a month before I returned home from my mission, so I missed it. I hope this whole post doesn't come across as calloused or anything. I'm just trying to share my memories. It's been normal to me to grow up with only one grandma and grandpa, and I guess Joshua is doing the same, now that I think about it. Of course, Cody's grandma and grandpa are still here, and Joshua spends a couple of hours there every week while Cody is in class, but, sadly they may not be around much longer. That's why it's important to treasure every minute that we can. You never know when someone's time may come.

It's all over!

Well, the 2009 ACERC Conference is over now, and I am so very relieved! It went well. There were the expected little mishaps along the way, but by and large I think everyone had a good time. I appreciate everyone's support! I'm just glad I don't have to worry about another one for several months... =)

23rd Annual ACERC Conference

Well, it's almost here! Probably 90% of the reason I have my job is because of an event that will take place on Monday and Tuesday of next week--the 23rd Annual ACERC Conference (ACERC = Advanced Combustion Engineering Research Center...you can see why we abbreviate it). I am the ACERC Secretary, and that means I'm pretty much in charge of organizing everything for this conference--registration, scheduling, communication with presenters, catering, etc. It's a huge undertaking, and it makes me pretty busy. This year, though, things are going a lot more smoothly, partially because it's my third conference and I know what I'm doing now, and also because the registration is now done online so that removes quite a bit of my work. I still have had a lot to do, of course, and I'll be glad when it's over and my responsibilities resume their normal levels. Having it all go off without a hitch (well, with as few hitches as possible) would really give me satisfaction, so hopefully it'll go well. I probably won't understand much--if anything--of what is said at the presentations, and since I have to attend, I'll get some good reading done, so that's good. I just hope I don't forget to bring something vital. Wish me luck!

Edited to add: I just found out this morning (Friday) that, after two years of trying to get BYU to do some sort of press release about this event, I've finally succeeded! You can read it here. They put it in better terms than I ever could. So yeah, that's what this conference will be all about. Thanks for letting me share!

Happy (Belated) Valentine's Day!

Well, Valentine's Day for us dawned white and snowy, and Cody got some good news: his Saturday class was canceled! I guess his teacher, a native of Georgia, didn't feel it was safe to travel from SLC to UVU, so he gave them all the day off. Of course, we weren't complaining. We both had a bit of last-minute shopping to do, so we took advantage of the extra time. Upon returning home from his shopping trip, Cody presented me with some beautiful red roses, which I loved, of course. Then Brianne came over to watch Joshua while we went to Tucanos Brazilian Grill. They had a special Valentine's Day event planned, with red tableclothes, fresh flowers, candlelight, grilled shrimp, filet mignon, chocolate-covered strawberries, and a rose after dinner--in addition to all the normal stuff. Mmmm, tasty. Then we just enjoyed the evening together. And for a present, Cody gave me a blue topaz necklace, using that gift card I won on the radio over Christmas. He had intended to get me a necklace with my birthstone, but he didn't realize my birthstone is actually a diamond, so he instead settled on December, which is Joshua's birthstone. All in all, it was a good Valentine's Day, full of love for each other and all that mushiness. I'm so grateful for the man I married almost two and a half years ago--Te amo, meu amor!

Headaches...

I have a headache again. For those of you who don't know, I've gotten frequent headaches for awhile now. I had them off and on in high school and my first three years of college, they were pretty frequent during my mission, and I think they were off and on while I met and dated Cody. They seemed to lessen when I was pregnant and breastfeeding, but now that Joshua is fully weaned, they're back in full force. I thought cutting my hair would help, but I haven't noticed any difference. I don't know what the problem is. I had an MRI just before I got pregnant, and it was normal. I've never officially been diagnosed with migraines, but I wonder if maybe I should be. I don't think they're stress-related, as I get them on the most random days. I wonder if staring at a computer screen all day is part of it? I sometimes wish I had a job that let me get up and walk around more, or that had less computer involvement. Of course, I'm not going to look for another job in this economy, but it would be nice. Sigh. I hope Joshua behaves himself tonight, because his mommy isn't going to be in the best of moods and his daddy needs to study for his test tomorrow... =\

Fighting FOCA

The issue of abortion is one that is very real and very important in our society today. In fact, my belief that life is sacred has only intensified since becoming a mother. I'm not one for trying to push an objective through my blog, but I saw this on a friend's blog and had to pass the word on. Thanks.

Here's the original blog post:
President Obama has said, "The first thing I’d do as President is sign the Freedom of Choice Act. That’s the first thing I’d do."

What is the Freedom of Choice Act? It basically eliminates EVERY restriction on abortion.

1. Partial-birth abortion will now be legal.

2. Parental consent laws for minors will no longer be in effect. Although a seventeen-year-old girl has to have her parents present in order to get acne medicine, a thirteen-year-old can get an abortion without her parents knowing.

3. Laws prohibiting public funding of abortion will be struck down. The American taxpayer will now have to fund something many of us consider to be murder.

4. Laws requiring women to be shown information about (including being shown ultrasounds) and alternatives to abortion will be struck down. Think about any other surgery that's performed: you are bombarded with information. And yet, in one of the most invasive medical procedures, women would be kept ignorant of the facts.

5. Laws allowing medical staff and hospitals to refuse to perform abortion on grounds of conscience will be struck down. (Where's the freedom of choice here?)

6. Laws prohibiting medical personnel other than licensed physicians from performing abortions would be invalidated because they may "interfere with" access to abortion. (Talk about protection for women!)

7. Government agencies and officials are prohibited from taking any action that would "discriminate against the exercise of" the FOCA-created legal rights, with respect to any "benefits, facilities, services, or information," would leave government officials open to lawsuits for anything that anybody thought "discriminate(s)" against abortion.

Basically, people that are PRO LIFE are given NO CHOICE in the matter of abortion. Catholic hospitals have threatened to close down if this passes because they will refuse to do abortions and Obama does not want them to have that CHOICE. Obama already took away our choice to use our taxes to fund abortions.

SO...what can we do? Here is a website to sign a petition against FOCA.
Fight Foca Petition- Click and sign

The better thing to do, in my opinion, is to email your Congressman to make sure that this bill never even gets out of Congress and to Obama's desk. http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/

Okay, that's the end of it all. Thanks for helping to get the word out.
